THE INSTITUTE / Public Recognition

Public recognition of the Institute of Fiscal Studies

  • In June 2006, the Institute of Fiscal Studies (IEF) won the XII Infanta Cristina Economics Prize of Castilla y León , for, according to the jury, outstanding “dedication of this institution to economics research applied over nearly half a century, becoming an international and national reference as a centre of research, study and debate of the problems of Public Economics in its widest sense.” According to the minutes of the jury, the Institute of Fiscal Studies has provided an extraordinary service as a nexus between decisions made in the sphere of Inland Revenue and basic theoretical studies. Since its creation, the IEF has sought to be a centre of research, study and debate of the problems of Inland Revenue in its widest sense; a centre which receives and disseminates the ideas and experiences of the sphere of public finances, and a place for reflection and specialist training in public sector economics. The Institute is also an obligatory point of reference for researchers and students of Inland Revenue. Its publications are well-known in the scientific sphere and on the Spanish publishing market.
  • In February 2010, the Institute of Fiscal Studies received recognition for its participation in the Model European Parliament Educational Programme which held its 10th edition at the Asamblea de Madrid. This is a debate programme organised by Caja Madrid and the Fundación San Patricio, with great prestige among students of the first year of the Bachillerato and Further Education, and over the years has had a significant impact on the training of young people in Spain. The programme offers young people the opportunity to debate subjects of topical interest following the protocol of the Strasbourg Chamber. For example, nearly 54,000 students from 13 Autonomous Communities took part in the tenth edition.

The Model European Parliament programme (MEP) has reached its 10th anniversary in Spain. To celebrate these ten years of encouraging awareness of European citizenship and the culture of constructive parliamentary debate among young people, the General Assembly of the 10th National Session of the Model was held on Monday 22 February in the Asamblea de Madrid, and awards were given to various personalities of the world of European politics and education who have supported the programme over the years. The award winners were the ex-president of the European Parliament and Honorary President of the MEP, José Maria Gil Robles; the special ambassador for EU integration projects, Carlos Carnero; the president of the Schools Council of the Community, Francisco López Rupérez; the Director General of the Institute of Fiscal Studies, José María Labeaga, and the president of the Asamblea de Madrid, Elvira Rodríguez. The managing director of Caja Madrid’s corporate social programme, Carmen Contreras, also attended.

The IEF took part in this 10th edition for the first time and in a very active way, helping to prepare the subject “The economic crisis: preventing international tax fraud”. This was recognised by the award given to the Institute of Fiscal Studies by Caja Madrid and the Fundación San Patricio. The sculpture representing the event was accepted by the Director General of the IEF, who gave some words of thanks and remarked in the Asamblea de Madrid on its public recognition of the workers at the Institute who prepared all the documentation, explained the terms of the possible collaboration to sponsors, and had everything ready to make the participation of the Institute a success, sharing with them the award and congratulating them publically for their commitment and good work.
